Founder & CEO
Jon Weitz and his wife Lisa started Avocet in 2006 with a vision to create a hospitality company that was dedicated to provide unique guest experiences. The idea was to identify boutique properties that needed renovation and repositioning. The goal is always to create a guest experience that is more than just a stay in a hotel.
After graduating from Clemson University with a degree in Finance, Jon started his career in banking. After a few years, Jon decided to go to law school and earned his J.D. from The University of South Carolina. After law school, Jon joined a large Charleston, SC hotel company and began representing resort and golf course developers. This was Jon’s first exposure to the world of hospitality.
Jon left the law firm to work for the owner of Kiawah Island Golf Resort to help entitle and build the Sanctuary Hotel at Kiawah Island. He also worked with the group to acquire and completely restore the historic Hermitage Hotel in Nashville, Tenn.
The experience building the Sanctuary Hotel and renovating The Hermitage Hotel caused Jon to realize his passion was to create a company dedicated to creating unique hotel experiences. The idea for Avocet Hospitality Group was born on his back porch having dinner with friends.
Jon and Lisa love to travel, especially to their favorite island of St. Barth in the French West Indies. Jon and Lisa reside in Charleston, SC and they have 2 children – Jessica and Jonathan.
